Language Arts

This week we began reading about the life of Harriet Tubman.  She was such an inspirational figure in our history that I know we will enjoy the novel.  Many students are already making connections to their learning in Social Studies class.  To help us keep track of all the information, we have created a folder for the novel.  In this folder, we are writing chapter summaries and details, as well as character traits.  At the end of each week we will have a comprehension test over our discussions and notes that were taken.   In English, we finished Chapter 32 on quotation marks and colons.  We then began the next chapter on correctly punctuating book titles, poems, etc.

Math

We will be taking a test over sections 9-1 through 9-4 on Tuesday.  All fifth graders should study conversions with customary units of length and the metric system.

Next we will begin the last few units of Chapter 9 and learn more about time and temperature.  Please stress to your fifth grader that school is still in session and doing his/her best is still a priority!

Science & Social Studies

SCIENCE

We will finish the last chapter of our Human Body Unit next week and have our chapter test on Friday the 16th.  How appropriate that our health talk will be the same day!

We will continue to study the systems of the human body with additional resource materials.  It is very important that students keep track of these handouts as the material is not in our textbook.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will have our chapter test on Tuesday the 13th.  Remember that the mhschool chapter review is due at that time.

ABC books will take some time to read and grade so please be patient.

Religion

We are wrapping up our discussions on the Sacraments and the call to be holy.  On Friday, we will be given the opportunity to spend a half hour in Adoration.  It will be a great way to end the week in prayer with the Blessed Sacrament.

Finally, what does it mean to show respect?  What does a respectful student look like?  In class, we have discussed this and shared ideas on how to be more respectful to God, all adults, other students, and our school.
