May 2008

Dear Parents,

May has finally arrived and the kids will be able to start enjoying the beautiful spring weather…hopefully Mother Nature will help us out!  As the weather gets warmer we all tend to get a little more energy.  Please remind your child to stay focused in school and use that energy to learn everything they can this last month of school.  Also, as the year begins to wind down we have some important first grade news to share with you.

Reading:

The children will be completing the last book in our reading series “Ideas”.  A great idea can be anything that makes life better in some way (an idea, an invention, a better way to do something).  A great idea often comes about when a problem needs to be solved.  Anyone can have a great idea (scientists, inventors, writers, teachers and children).  Please keep this theme in mind throughout the month as your child will often be making connections and forming ideas around this big idea.

Please keep reading to your child even though he/she may be a good reader.  Research shows that it is very important for even good readers to listen to someone else reading.  When children are listening to an adult read, they are learning and practicing lots of upper-level thinking skills, comprehension skills, learning lots of new information, and most importantly, the adult is showing the child that he/she values reading.

Math:

Throughout the month of May we will continue to work on money concepts and introduce measurement.  The chapter on measurement will explore estimating and measuring with standard and non-standard nits.  The children will become familiar with measurement terms, concepts and further develop their spatial sense.  Some of the vocabulary words that might like to start introducing are: inch, centimeter, lighter, heavier and longer.

Religion:

Throughout the month of May, the first graders will continue to celebrate Mary, Gods’ mother and ours. Every May we ask her to be the Queen of our hearts, and we turn to her to learn how e can experience the love of the Lord in the joys and sorrows of daily life.  One of the ways that we expressed our love was by attending the beautiful May Crowning.

If your child would like to bring fresh flowers to school the week of May 19th; we will be honoring Mary, whose statue is present in our class, by placing the flowers in a vase.

Noteworthy Nets News:

Kudos’s to our first graders and their parents.  We were able to purchase 38 nets for families in Africa.  We believe that this was a very worthwhile service project and we’re so impressed (but not surprised) with the generosity from our first grade families.

Important Dates:

  • Our Mothers Day Prayer Service, Friday, May 9th at 9:30 a.m.
  • Field trip to Cutting Hall to see the live production of “Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat”.
  • Although, the children are allowed and encouraged to bring water bottles-please make sue that they are pop top bottles as we are experiencing many spills.
  • Last book order form for the year is due Friday, May 9th.
  • Hot dog lunch will be served to all students on Wednesday, May 28th.
  • Field days are Thursday, May 29th for first graders.
