Religion

Thank you to all for helping with the great success of our 5th Grade Neighborhood Food Drive.  Students collected and stocked the food pantry with over a thousand pounds of food!!  They are very appreciative of our donations.  As a culminating activity, the 5th graders wrote about their experience in English class….their observations were very moving.

Next week we will finish mass parts with Chapter 11 on the concluding rites.  Students have been working with a partner to complete a mass booklet for the kindergarteners.  Booklets will be due before Christmas break.

Prayer for the month of November: Beginning Monday, students in 5A will be tested on the concluding prayer of the rosary. Students in 5B have completed the testing.

Science

WOW! What a quick chapter. Adaptations has been an easy concept for most of the students.  Most have done a great job on both their posters and packets.  We will conclude our chapter next week with the chapter test towards the end of the week.

Social Studies

Chapter 5 has been a little new information and a little old information.  It has been very timely that we end before break with the Pilgrims celebrating Thanksgiving with the Wampanoag.  We will complete this  chapter and have our chapter test before Thanksgiving break.

This chapter contains many explorers and their accomplishments.  Please help your student to study by reviewing their notes found in the foldable they completed in class.

Math

We have started dividing with two digit dividers.  Initially we looked at patterns in division and then worked with estimating quotients. We will be practicing with larger dividends and with zeros in our quotient next week.

After School Math—Tuesday, Nov. 18th  (permission slip required to attend)

Language Arts

English — We finished Chapter 10 and began Chapter 11 this week on action verbs, helping verbs, and verb phrases.  A test over both these chapters will be on Wed., Nov. 19th.

Reading — From now until Christmas break we will be reading a novel, Number the Stars, in class.  All required Spelling and Vocabulary work will be given to the students weekly on Mondays.  Therefore, the regular Spelling workbook pages will not be needed for awhile; however, Spelling tests will remain on Fridays.   Comprehension quizzes will be given periodically.  All work will be kept in a “novel folder.”

2nd Quarter Book Report Requirement — All fifth graders are required to read a Reading Counts book and take a comprehension test by Jan. 9th.
