We would like to thank the  8th grade students that participated in the Marengo Middle School Scholastic Bowl:  Allie, Anna, Clare, Mark, Amanda, Luke, and Andy.  They spent many lunch periods practicing and studying for the competition and we appreciate all of their hard work and dedication.  They represented are school very well and we are proud of them.

7th Grade Literature

It is hard to believe that we are into the fourth quarter already!  I have seen a great change in everyone’s essay writing.  They are adding examples from the stories that they read when they write, they are making sure to answer every part of the question, and hopefully they are realizing that it is necessary to study for a literature test to do well.

We will be finishing one or two more stories in the literature book and then we will read another the novel, Twister, together.  Please encourage your child to keep up with the assigned reading.  Novel reading is something that the students tend to postpone and the result is poor quiz grades.  Each student is still responsible for Reading Counts reading.  The first due date is April 22nd and the second is May 20th.  Make sure that they continue reading over the summer months.  It helps them increase their vocabulary and comprehension.  Please let me know if you need any help with book titles.

8th Grade Literature

We have just finished reading the book Taking Sides and the students seem to enjoy it a lot – one of the reasons was that it had to do with a basketball player, and the other was that it was short!  Some students don’t read the entire book and that results in low test scores, a problem that we’ve had for some time.  We are going to be reading some Science Fiction next and then read one more novel before the school year ends.

Their essay writing has improved so much over the past two years and we are so proud of them.  It has become automatic for them to backup their answers with examples from the stories that they have read.  It is hard to believe we are at the end of the school year already!

Please keep them reading over the summer.  You can get a list of the novels they are supposed to read in high school and have them start early.  They can take notes as they read to help them recall during the school year.  Reading something twice is always better for the memory.  Please let us know if you need help getting the book titles for next year; we can give a call over to the schools too.

8th Grade Religion

We just finished studying the chapter titled Church Fathers and Heresies and just started the chapter titled Vatican II and the Church in the Modern World.  Vatican II is widely considered to have been the most important event of the Church’s life of the twentieth century.  We are looking forward to some great discussions as the students continue to learn about their faith and Church history.

Confirmation Formation I is completed.  Mrs. Platta came and talked to the students about next year and choosing a sponsor.  We are still going to visit our prayer partners as often as we can.  They love to have the 8th graders come and visit and work on projects with them.  It is so nice to see how well they work together and it is something that the first graders will always remember.

There will be much Mass planning going on in the month of May, with May Crowning being the first of many activities that the 8th graders will have.  They really have an understanding of what takes place during a Mass, so the planning is even more special to them.  This school year has gone by so quickly!  God has blessed us all.
