Catholicity: Living our FaithWe worship together as a family here at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School. Students attend Mass weekly, on holy days of obligation, and for special events such as May Crowning. Students participate regularly in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Reconciliation and school-wide praying of the Rosary and The Divine Mercy Chaplet. Priests visit all the classrooms and teach religion class to the upper grades on a regular basis. Students also participate in grade level retreats, daily recitation of a decade of the Rosary, sacramental preparation for Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in 2nd grade, living Stations of the Cross presented by the 8th grade, "prayer partner" activities between older and younger students, morning, afternoon and meal prayers, altar serving for grades 5-8, and of course, daily religion instruction.
Community Service: Our Faith in ActionThe students of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School give of the Time, Talent, and Treasure in many ways. Here are a few examples: Collect food and stock shelves for the Food Pantry and other local organizations; raise money, shop for and package Thanksgiving meals; pick up litter around campus, sing to retirement communities; write letters and collect care packages for service men and women; help purchase tents for P.A.D.S. homeless shelter. As a school we have a monthly collection that goes to local organizations such as Honor Flight Chicago for World War II veterans. In addition, students are asked to do a family service project of their choice each year. Some have performed yard work for neighbors, served in soup kitchens, and packed bags of grain for third=world countries.
